Up the Amazon tomorrow or the next day.

November 17 The Amazon

We are heading toward the Amazon.  We went to a lecture and learned some stuff.  If I don’t write it down, I will not remember it (that is the part I do remember right now.

The Amazon was “discovered” and travelled down by Pizzaro’s brother’s partner.  He is said to have actually found a village where women fought with men.  The women were large and fierce.  They were part of a warrior tribe.  We learned that South America was inhabited around the same time as North America (per archeological finds) not later, as was originally thought.

There is no Amazon delta.  There is the mouth of the Amazon, but no delta formed because the currents of the Atlantic flow up the river sometimes and when the flow turns the other way, all the silt that would form a delta flows out into the Atlantic.  Fresh water from the Amazon goes 100’s of miles into the ocean.  The river sends more fresh water into the ocean that the 3 other large rivers combined.  More info than you every wanted to know…..

We pass the equator tomorrow morning around 7 am.  Sorry, no pictures of the equator.  The line is very light and hard to photograph  lol
